LITIS STADIUM DEVELOPMENT
The City of Vincent is moving ahead with its plans for the future of Litis Stadium and Britannia Reserve.
The stadium is the home ground of the Floreat Athena Football Club and the Vincent City Ducks gridiron team, while the adjacent Britannia Reserve is also used by both clubs along with the Leederville Cricket Club, North Perth United Soccer Club and local schools.
In November 2021 Council endorsed the Britannia Reserve North West Development Plan. The key priorities in the plan included building a multi-sports changeroom facility on the grandstand footprint and upgrading Floreat Athena's clubrooms.
Demolition of the Litis Grandstand and the adjacent ablution building was the first stage of works. The former grandstand, which was nearly 60 years old, was structurally unsound and no longer safe for public use.
Now complete
Litis Stadium Upgrade
The City of Vincent completed construction of a new multi-sports changeroom facility in August 2025, thanks to a $3 million investment from the Australian Government.
The new state-of-the-art changeroom includes umpire and physio rooms and meets Football West’s National Premier League venue requirements and universal design standards.
A public toilet was added to improve inclusivity and accessibility for users of the reserve next to the stadium.
Upgrades to Floreat Athena Football Club’s clubrooms, including roof repairs, kitchen and bar upgrades, new flooring, and bathroom and air-conditioning renewals, have also been completed.
The project achieved a key outcome of the Britannia North West Reserve Development Plan, which aimed to future-proof the stadium and park.
Vincent worked collaboratively with Athena, who are the primary tenants of the stadium, to lock in the funding and to complete the project.
Litis Stadium Underpass
The City of Vincent removed the Litis Stadium underpass in August 2023 to create a better connection between the stadium and Britannia Reserve for local residents and sporting clubs.
The underpass was built for the 1962 Commonwealth Games as part of the former Lake Monger Velodrome.
The underpass, which was built below normal ground level, had come to the end of its life and was filled with water. It had been closed for seven years and was a health concern with the breeding of mosquitos and algae in the trapped water.
In September 2023, the space was filled in to ground level to make way for a new footpath, connecting the reserve. Surrounding existing soil was reshaped to open up the hill bank.
Following earthworks, the area was landscaped with around 17 WA native trees and eco-zoned with low-growing native plants and mulch.
Current Works
Lighting Upgrade
Night football and gridiron matches, and international-level training sessions, will be making a comeback at Litis Stadium with an upcoming lighting upgrade, which is supported by an $800,000 investment from the WA Government.
The existing lights have degraded over time and are no longer compliant with National Premier League (NPL) requirements.
Local football club Floreat Athena can no longer play night matches at Litis, which is their home ground, due to the poor condition of the existing lights.
With new lights, Floreat Athena will be able to hold more junior’s and women’s training sessions and matches. The Vincent City Ducks Gridiron Club will also be able to train and play in the evenings.
The new system, which is identical to the one at Britannia Reserve, has been designed to better contain the lighting to the pitch.
The lights are adjustable and will only be turned on at full capacity for official NPL and gridiron matches and FIFA level training sessions.
Lighting levels
- 200 lux for club training
- 200 lux for club games
- 500 lux for Night Series matches, FIFA, national and international level training
Community benefits include a reduction in anti-social behaviour and a more activated sporting and recreational space that compliments the new skate space next door.
An iron filter will be installed in the irrigation system to significantly improve the quality of the water that is sprayed on the pitch and provide a healthier environment for plants around the area. The filter will also reduce bore stains at the new changerooms and skate park.
Minor preparation works began in October, and the lights will be delivered to site on trucks in December 2025.
Cranes will be used for the installation, which will be completed ready for training sessions for the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Women’s Asian Cup Australia teams in February/March 2026.
FAQs
What impact will these works have on residents?
The works are not expected to have significant impact on residents. Works will take place between 7am and 5pm to limit noise and disruption to nearby residents.
What are the benefits of the upgrades?
Once the upgrades are complete, local clubs Floreat Athena and Vincent City Ducks will be able to train and play at night. The community will also benefit from better surveillance, reduced anti-social behaviour and a more activated sporting and recreational space.
Why do the lights need to be at 500 lux?
Stadium lights need to reach a brightness level of 500 lux for several reasons, such as for visibility, safety and to meet FIFA training standards.
Will the lights always be turned on at full capacity?
No. The lights will only be turned on at full capacity for select night games.
Will the lights spill into my home?
The lights will be above the sight line of nearby homes as the light fittings are aimed onto into the pitch, meaning there will be no obtrusive light spill into houses. This will be a positive change for the community compared to the existing lights. The lights are also very similar to the ones at Britannia Reserve.
Can the lights be switched off or dimmed to a lower lux at night?
Yes. The lights can be dimmed at night to suit community use when there are no training sessions or matches.
Will there be impact on residents accessing Britannia Road?
There will be no impact on access to homes on Britannia Road.
When will the works be completed?
Works are expected to be completed by February 2026.
