Positive progress on Public Health Plan

Implemented 12 months ago, The City of Vincent’s Public Health Plan 2020-2025 provides a framework for the health and wellbeing of the Vincent community.

The five-year plan is the City’s roadmap to encourage residents to lead a healthy, happy and connected lifestyle in a supported environment.

On track to meet 83 percent of its 2020/21 targets, the plan provides opportunities to be active around Vincent with plans to increase healthy food and drink options across our venues, festivals and community events.

An ambitious target to have all our town centres go Smoke-Free by 2025 will also be brought forward, with the project expected to launch in May next year.

Mayor Emma Cole said local governments played an important role in creating environments that support healthy living and quality of life.

“This starts with our core business – things like maintaining parks and playgrounds, building safe footpaths and upgrading our ageing facilities like Beatty Park Leisure Centre,’’ she said.

“We also try to foster healthy living through initiatives like Pop Up Play, which are designed to inspire kids to use parks and play spaces more creatively and freely.

“For the adults, we have created activated spaces like North Perth Common and Leederville Village Square, where people can connect and feel part of a community.”

Mayor Cole said asking smokers to butt out along popular shopping, dining and entertainment strips in our town centres held many health benefits.

“The smoke-free town centres will include Oxford Street in Leederville, Beaufort Street, Angove Street in North Perth and Scarborough Beach Road in Mt Hawthorn,’’ she said.

“The move would protect the community from secondhand smoke, discourage the uptake of smoking in children and young people, and provide a supportive environment for people who are trying to quit smoking or have recently quit smoking.

“Last year, we consulted on our Public Health Plan and this included asking our community for feedback on smoke-free town centres, with 85 per cent of respondents supporting us making this move,” she said.

Public Health Plan highlights in 2020/2021 include:

  • Progress towards Smoke Free Town Centres by consulting the community and businesses on five draft smoke free Town Centre boundaries.
  • Establishment of a Local Drug Action Group (funded by Mental Health Commission) in collaboration with City of Subiaco and City of Perth to develop strategies to reduce alcohol and other drug related harm in the community.
  • Development of an annual health and wellbeing communication plan to inform and engage with the community on priority health topics for the City, which includes regular social media posts on health campaigns.
  • Delivery of a Youth Engagement Summit with discussion topics including resilience, mental health compassion, social responsibility and the impact of social media on wellbeing.
  • Completion of Banks Reserve Active Zone for all ages and abilities to enjoy.
  • Increasing female participation in sport through City funding for Girls Come and Try Event (Mount Hawthorn Cardinals), Beach Volleyball for Mums (Beach Volleyball Hub) and Increase Young Girls Participation in Sport (Floreat Athena).
  • Over 400 COVID-19 inspections of contact registers and COVID Safe Plans required for food businesses, public buildings and lodging houses since December 2020.
  • Next financial year will see the development of healthy food and drink guidelines and increased support to deliver programs for seniors aimed at reducing falls and injuries.
