The community can now offer a helping hand to create poppies as part of Vincent’s art installation for Remembrance Day.
Now in its second year, the Poppy Project is an opportunity for residents, local schools and groups, and families of war veterans to make poppies for a grand display outside City of Vincent’s Administration Building in Leederville.
A total of 1,247 poppies were made last year, and Vincent is looking to add to this number and create an even larger display over the next few months.
Each poppy is a reminder of those who served in conflicts and peacekeeping operations.
Purple poppies will also be included to recognise the animals who served alongside Australian Armed Forces.
“It was heartwarming to see so many people contributing to last year’s truly special display to remember those Australians who have lost their lives to war,” said Mayor Alison Xamon.
“The simple activity of making poppies brings people together to share stories about how war affects families and to connect with others who had similar backgrounds.
“We are pleased to run the Poppy Project again this year, and we are aiming to collect even more handcrafted pieces to add to the installation.
“I encourage you to get involved and take the time to make a poppy at home or one of our workshops.
“Lest we forget the true cost of war.”
A poppy template is available here.
The public can also donate red or black wool towards the project.
Poppies can be dropped off at the Administration Building, 244 Vincent Street, Leederville.
With popular demand, Vincent will be hosting more workshops this year from July to September.
