We’re six weeks into the WAFL season and it has been fantastic to see night matches being played under our new lights and on the upgraded turf at Sullivan Logistics Stadium in Leederville.
I was proud to officially unveil the upgrades last month alongside our CEO David MacLennan, Deputy Premier Rita Saffioti, WA Football and WAFL clubs East Perth and Subiaco.
Keep reading to find out more about the project, what the Federal Election means for Vincent and a proposal to activate our laneways.
With new turf and broadcast lighting, the stadium has been transformed into a premier venue for televised WAFL, WAFLW and AFLW matches.
It’s a fitting upgrade for a stadium with such a rich history. These improvements also put us in a good position, should WA secure a future AFL or AFLW Gather Round match.
I would like to congratulate Labor, and Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, on winning the Federal Election on the weekend.
Also, congratulations to our local Perth MP Patrick Gorman MP on his re-election.
With Labor’s win, we have secured several community-focused election commitments, including $500,000 to combat the polyphagous shot-hole borer and plant more trees at Hyde Park.
The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development is expected to undertake essential tree removal works on the two islands in the lakes this month.
Losing trees is the last thing anyone wants to see, but this action is being taken to stop the heavily borer infested trees on the islands spreading the borer to healthy trees in Hyde Park. We will be acting quickly to replant the islands through our three-year restoration program and to minimise disruption to the local fauna breeding seasons.
It was an honour to join the RSL WA Mt Hawthorn Sub-Branch, war veterans, their families, local schools and community members at our ANZAC Day march and service at Axford Park.
It is important that we continue to acknowledge the service and sacrifice of past and present members of our defence forces and the true cost of war. I spoke of my Grandfather who fought in Gallipoli as part of the 10th Light Horse Brigade.
Our recent Unstoppable Youth Week event was a huge success. It was great to see so many people try new experiences – from circus tricks, to inclusive cycling, football and more.
Looking ahead, we’ll be looking at introducing a Laneway Beautification Program, which builds on the success of our Adopt-a-Verge initiative.
I have seen firsthand how activated laneways can boost property values, create safer streets, and foster stronger community ties. I am excited to see how we might bring this opportunity to Vincent with appropriate support and resources.
Finally, a quick reminder that you can now book your green waste collection all year-round through Verge Valet.
This means there’s no more waiting for set collection dates. You can schedule a pickup when it suits your garden maintenance needs.
Best wishes,
Mayor Alison Xamon
