East Perth Royals, underground power, and help for the homeless

As a life-long supporter of the mighty East Perth Royals, I was pleased to see my team make it to this year’s Grand Final against South Fremantle.  Whilst the final 2-point loss was disappointing a huge congratulations must go to the East Perth Reserves for their Grand Final victory!

And whilst East Perth now has next year to look forward to, things are looking less promising following last month’s WA Planning Commission decision to remove the conditions for Holcim and Heidelberg to be responsible for fully decommissioning and decontaminating the concrete batching sites in Claisebrook.

The State Government has said it has no plans to acquire the land, which means the potentially contaminated Claisebrook sites run the risk of laying dormant following closure of the plants. Without these strategic parcels of land, it will be challenging to achieve the infill density targets set by the State Government and the WAPC.

The City of Vincent will continue to stridently advocate for the concrete batching plants to be moved out of this mixed residential/commercial zone into an industrial zone where they belong.

I am both saddened and concerned to see a notable rise in the number of people sleeping rough within Vincent. It is a stark reminder of why we urgently need to build more homes. While we can’t fix the homelessness issue overnight, we can still do something to help those less fortunate. If you are concerned about someone’s welfare, I encourage you to contact the Homeless Engagement, Assessment Response Team (HEART) on 9223 1111 or 1800 199 008.

On a more positive note, our underground power project is well underway. In addition to improved safety and visual amenity, underground power increases network capacity, meaning it can host more rooftop solar, electric vehicles, and other energy saving tech that will help us towards net-zero. It will also allow us to increase our urban canopy, which is an important part of our Enhanced Environment Strategy.

Western Power is currently working in North Perth and Mt Hawthorn. Timelines for this project do change so I encourage you to visit our website to see when works will be happening in your area.

Last week I appeared in front of the Parliamentary Inquiry into e-rideables. There are many things which can be done to improve the safety of these important alternative transport options. I look forward to seeing the final recommendations and I really hope that amongst them is a strong recommendation to fund our bike path infrastructure.

Best wishes,

Mayor Alison Xamon
