We hosted a Youth Forum on 21 October to ask young people their thoughts on projects and programs provided by the City. It was a first step in building a Youth Action Plan led by former Perth Wildcats Vice Captain Greg Hire, now a Community Partner at Vincent.
Students from Aranmore Catholic College and Mount Lawley Senior High School joined young people from Foyer Oxford for the forum. They participated in activities, round table discussions and gave valuable information on issues affecting them now and in the future.
Included in the forum were stalls from ten service providers to help connect young people to more information and support if needed.
“We wanted to gain an insight into issues that are relevant for young people and what they would like to see in terms of City projects, funding and facilities,” said Greg Hire.
“We thought it was important to have these initial discussions face to face to determine some key priorities and create an initial framework. We will be having more consultations with young people in our community, including an online survey once those priorities have been determined.”
A Youth Action Plan was put forward by Councillor Alex Castle as a new initiative in the City’s 2019 / 2020 budget and included in the latest update to the City’s Corporate Business Plan. The aim of the plan is to build on the work already undertaken by the City and the Vincent Youth Network.
“Before creating a Youth Action Plan we wanted to make sure that we have some deeper conversations with young people first, rather than make assumptions on what they need and want,” said Mayor Emma Cole.
