The City is celebrating pedal power during Bike Week, which runs between 15 – 24 March. Free events include the biannual Bike Market in Mount Lawley, a Bike Breakfast in Mount Hawthorn and a Bike Wash in Leederville.
“If you own a bike, whether you are a regular or casual cyclist, Bike Week is a great excuse to get on your bike and embrace the benefits of cycling. We’re a small inner city local government of just 11 square kilometers, but we have excellent cycling infrastructure with connections between town centres and to community hubs, like Loftus Centre and our library. We also have good links through to Perth for commuter cyclists,” said Mayor Emma Cole.
The Bike Market at the Barlee Street carpark in Mount Lawley will be held on Saturday 16 March from 8am – 12pm. It attracts over 40 stallholders selling racing bikes, choppers, regular bikes for all ages, accessories and clothing.
“We have a great relationship with Bicycles for Humanity WA who help us run the Bike Market on Saturday 16 March. This fantastic charity sends donated bikes to some of the world’s poorest areas to help alleviate poverty and encourage sustainable transport. Stallholder fees at the market will go to this cause so we’re really pleased to support them again,” said Mayor Cole.
The Bike Breakfast from 7am – 9am on Wednesday 20 March is aimed at people commuting by bike to work or school. The free breakfast takes place in Axford Park in Mount Hawthorn.
The Bike Wash is on the Principal Shared Path near Bourke Street Leederville from 4pm – 6pm on Thursday 21 March and is ideal for cyclists coming home and would like to treat their bike to a free wash and some tender loving care from the bike mechanics.
“Bike Week is a great reminder to consider using your bike for your next short trip around Vincent, or for the work commute. Jumping on your bike instead is good for your health, great for easy access to local businesses and parking, and is a whole lot safer on our bike paths and boulevards.”
Our Bike Week events are funded by the City of Vincent and supported by a $2,250 grant from the Department of Transport and WestCycle.
