Vincent Urgently Addressing Cleanaway Issue

Published on Tuesday, 4 February 2020 at 3:38:23 PM

The City of Vincent is working urgently to stop recyclable material being diverted to landfill after two recycling processors failed to reach an agreement.

The City’s waste contractor, Cleanaway, started sending recycling to Southern Metropolitan Regional Council for processing after a fire destroyed its material handling facility in November.

Cleanaway told the City with minimal notice its recycling would be diverted to landfill because it could not come to a long-term agreement with SMRC.

The City is meeting with the WA Local Government Association and other affected local governments tomorrow to discuss a co-ordinated response to the issue.

Representatives from Cleanaway and the State Government have been invited to attend the urgent meeting.

The City is also seeking independent advice about its contractual obligations with Cleanaway in its bid to find a solution.

“This a very fast-moving situation and we are looking for the quickest and the best resolution,” said Mayor Emma Cole.

“Any recycling being sent to landfill is a serious concern for us.

“We were happy that Cleanaway and SMRC were able to work together after the fire and we are keen to see that relationship continue.”

The City is committed to best recycling practice and residents are asked to continue to correctly sort their waste while the issue is being resolved.

“It is so important that our community keep recycling their waste and use their yellow topped bins for recyclables only as we seek an urgent solution for our recyclables to be processed,” said Mayor Cole.
