Response to the RSLWA commemoration policy

In today’s news, we understand that the WA Branch of the RSL is seeking to exclude the flying of the Aboriginal flag and Welcome to Country protocols during RSL WA ANZAC Day and Remembrance Day Services.

The City of Vincent will continue to fly the Aboriginal flag and follow our Welcome to Country and Acknowledgement of Country protocols at our ANZAC Day service in Axford Park, Mt Hawthorn and when commemorating Remembrance Day. In fact, the Aboriginal flag flies at the front of the City of Vincent Administration and at Axford Park every day.

This is what our community expects and we are deeply committed to this recognition.

This acknowledgement and deep respect is an important part of reconciliation and being inclusive. It also raises awareness of more than a century of service of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, including more than 100,000 soldiers who served in World War I.

The ANZAC Day Ceremony is a City of Vincent Civic Event, in strong partnership with our local Mt Hawthorn RSL Branch with whom we share a very good relationship. As such, the City’s formally adopted protocols apply.
