Female sport front and centre

Female sport is in the spotlight in Vincent this month, with an AFLW match set to take place at Leederville Oval, grants at a grass-roots level and major change room upgrades.

Big crowds are expected at Leederville Oval this Saturday, 29 February when the West Coast Eagles lock horns with the 2018 AFLW premiers the Western Bulldogs.

The City of Vincent waived the fees associated with the hire of the oval as part of its commitment to increasing female participation in sport. The change rooms at the oval have undergone a major renovation in time for the match to better cater for women and encourage wider participation. Shower cubicles and individual toilets have been built to accommodate female teams and support the development programs of Subiaco and East Perth Football Clubs.

“Gone are the days when footy was considered a men’s game and the change rooms only had to cater for males,” said Mayor Emma Cole.

“Women’s sport is booming and we are excited to be doing what we can to encourage girls and women to get involved.

“One way of doing this is to make sure change rooms are comfortable and appropriate for females.”

The change rooms at Charles Veryard Reserve have also been overhauled to make them more comfortable for females and people with disabilities, while work is currently taking place in the change rooms at Loftus Recreation Centre. One of the key users of Charles Veryard Reserve, Modernians Hockey Club, has seen a big rise in female participation over the past decade. Between 2008 and 2018, the club went from having four women’s teams and three girls’ teams to having 10 women’s teams and seven girls’ teams.

Last week, the City of Vincent gave Mount Hawthorn Cardinals Junior Football Club and North Perth Dynamites Netball Club a $2000 Female Sports Participation Grant each.

“These grants are designed to help our local clubs set up programs and activities that encourage equal participation in sport,” said Mayor Cole.

“We are proud to help grow female participation in sport at a grassroots level.”

The City would like to thank Sport Australia for generous grants totalling almost $234,000, which covered the cost of the upgrades at Charles Veryard Reserve and Loftus Recreation Centre. Subiaco and East Perth football clubs each contributed $10,000 towards the $140,000 upgrade at Leederville Oval.
