The City is improving Eton Street at Haynes Street and at Scarborough Beach Road, alongside upgrades at the Haynes Street and Sydney Street intersection to support better access to Haynes Street Reserve.

At the Eton Street and Haynes Street intersection, raised plateaus will be installed on all four approaches to slow vehicles. New pedestrian islands on Haynes Street will also make it easier and safer to reach the reserve.

Further north, changes at Eton Street and Scarborough Beach Road will focus on both safety and traffic flow. A raised platform will be added on the Eton Street approach to reduce speed. The current wide shared lane will be replaced with dedicated left and right turn lanes to improve movement onto Scarborough Beach Road.

Cyclists and pedestrians will also benefit. The bicycle bypass from Eton Street onto Scarborough Beach Road will be upgraded, and pedestrian islands will be improved to allow staged crossings across the intersection.

The designs aim to create safer, more accessible routes to the nearby play space, with staged crossings helping pedestrians move through the area in sections rather than all at once.

As Haynes Street Reserve continues to evolve, the section of road between Eton Street and Sydney Street will be reviewed further.

Broader planning for Eton Street will also form part of the upcoming Mount Hawthorn Precinct Transport Study, which will guide its future as a key cycling route.

Works will commence late April/early May 2026.

Funding

The project is funded through the State Government Black Spot Program, which aims to reduce crashes and save lives on Australian roads by funding works at high-risk locations.
