As one of many measures to promote safe driving on Vincent streets, four temporary speed awareness signs have been installed along Ellesmere Street in Mt Hawthorn. They will remain in place for around six months while Main Roads WA carries out construction on the Scarborough Beach Road and Green Street roundabout.
Speed awareness signs are designed to encourage safer driving by displaying a vehicle’s speed as it passes. Drivers travelling within the limit will see a green smiling face, while those going over will see a reminder to slow down.
Similar initiatives have been shown to positively influence driver behaviour and help create safer, more pleasant streets.
The signs will also collect traffic speed data to give us a clearer picture of average speeds. This will help us plan safer roads without relying on enforcement or fines.
These new signs are being used for the first time along Ellesmere Street in response to community feedback. We then plan to rotate them through other hotspot areas across Vincent as part of our broader Speed Awareness Program.
