2012 Garden Competition - winners announced!

Congratulations to all our winners!

Vincent hosted its 18th annual Garden Competition Awards last night presenting the winners with a range of great prizes and awards, including the coveted ‘Best Kept Street’ and ‘Mayor’s Encouragement Awards.

Vincent Mayor Alannah MacTiernan hosted the awards, saying “We’ve been evolving for a couple of million years and we’re hardwired to respond positively to green and to vegetation as that is where our sources of food are.

“This year we received a total of 98 category entries and I thank all entrants, and anyone who creates a beautiful garden, for caring about making our City as healthy and as green as possible”, said the Mayor.

Preliminary judging for this year’s competition was undertaken by the City’s passionate horticultural staff and the Claise Brook Catchment Group members between October 1st and 5th.

Final judging was carried out on Saturday 6 October with a new team including Vincent Councillors Matt Buckels, John Pintabona and Julia Wilcox, as well as Director Technical Services - Rick Lotznicker; Manager Parks & Property Services - Jeremy van den Bok; Adele Gismondi from the Water Corporation and our Community Judge, last year’s winner of the Best Residential Front Garden – Lynda Quinn.

A Green Thumb suggestion box implemented this year at the awards night brought to light the idea of a permanent plaque for garden comp winners, as a ‘badge of honour’ instead of a framed certificate and this will be discussed at the next Council Meeting.

The ‘big ticket item’ is always the ‘Best Kept Street/Part Street’ category – and this year the winner was Norfolk Street in North Perth (between Forrest Street & Vincent Street), second time winner of this award (the street sign has been added).

The ‘Mayor’s Encouragement Award’ went to Tony Nathan & Marit Kloostra of 37 Vine Street, North Perth. The judges were very impressed with the design and aesthetic appeal of Tony and Marit’s catchment friendly garden which included a stepped deck area to sit back and relax whilst enjoying the delights of their native garden. Their choice of plants also included a local ‘Spinifex’ self sown from a seed head collected at the beach.
