Diagonal Diversion Closure North Perth

What's happening?

The City of Vincent will be commencing diagonal diversion works at the intersection of Leake Street and Alma Road, North Perth with works starting on 6 February.

A diagonal diverter is either a raised median, bollards, and/or another type of treatment placed diagonally across an intersection to restrict through traffic movements. Diagonal diverters split a four-way intersection into two L-shaped turns.

During the six months of closure, Administration will be undertaking consultation and traffic impact studies with a Council report expected in September 2023 detailing the conclusion of the trial.

Please note

Road closures, warning signs and traffic control will be in place in accordance with the relevant Australian Standards, and delays should be expected.

To enable works to proceed smoothly, the intersection will be closed as required to vehicle traffic from 7am on 6 February when works are underway and during the trial period, the diversion will take effect from 10 February.

Please be advised that no vehicle access will be permitted during these operations.

FAQs

What is the purpose of the diagonal diversion?

The intent of the diagonal diversion is to divert large commercial vehicles servicing the shopping precinct away from residential streets and use roads better aligned with the traffic demands.

Why has Council decided to trial this approach?

The Council's decision and the Officer's recommendations can be found in the minutes for the August 23 Council meeting.

How will the City measure the trial treatment?

The City will be collecting traffic data, which will include traffic volumes of vehicles (including heavy vehicles) as well as speed data along several streets in the vicinity of the trial treatment every month during the six-month trial.

How will delivery trucks access the shopping complex?

Trucks and other heavy vehicles can use Fitzgerald Street (a district distributary A road) to access Alma Road for delivery purposes.

How do you exit the shopping complex and travel south on Fitzgerald Street?

If your journey requires heading south of Fitzgerald Street, alternative streets to use would follow Alma Road onto Leake Street, Left into View Street, Persimmon Street, back onto Alma Road, Leake Street then manoeuvring onto Raglan Road to head south into Fitzgerald Street.

Will the diagonal diversion allow cyclists to move through the treatment?

We understand Leake Street is a PBN (Perth Bicycle Network), a 2.5m gap within the treatment will allow for cycle movement.

This plan has been designed in accordance with the Australian Standards guidelines. Combined with the Main Roads WA regulatory signs and line marking standards. This has been approved and signed off by Main Roads WA.
