We’ve teamed up with bird experts to bring you a series of free events all about supporting local birdlife in Vincent.

From guided walks to garden tips and a powerful documentary screening, simple ways to make your neighbourhood a more welcoming place for birds.

Dr Rochelle Steven is a lecturer and Associate Dean of Engagement at Murdoch University, City of Vincent local, and passionate advocate of bird life.

Dr Boyd Wykes is a former Ornithologist and coordinator of Owl Friendly Margaret River.

All events are free and registration is essential. Please book one ticket for each person attending. Priority will be for City of Vincent residents. Photos and videos may be taken of the event.

A Bird Safe Vincent

Saturday 17 January 2026 | 10am – 12pm | Vincent Community Centre

Join us for a Bird Safe Workshop and learn practical ways to help protect our local birdlife. This session will cover important topics like the use of catios to reduce the impact of domestic pets on native birds and the dangers of certain rodenticides, which can harm birds of prey and other wildlife.

Bird Habitats by the River

Saturday 11 April 2026 | 9 – 10.30am | Warndoolier

A morning of bird watching with Dr Rochelle Steven along the banks of the Derbarl Yerrigan (Swan River).

We’ll explore the area’s wetlands, riverbanks and native bushland, learning how to spot and identify local birds and why these habitats are so important. Whether you're new to birdwatching or already love it, this is a great chance to connect with nature and see the biodiversity of this beautiful spot.

Warndoolier is located at 60 Joel Terrace in Mt Lawley and was formally known as Banks Reserve. Wear comfortable shoes, dress for the weather and bring a water bottle. Binoculars are handy if you’ve got them, but not essential.

Introducing the Birds of Vincent to your Garden

Discover the birds that call Vincent home and learn how to welcome them into your garden.

This workshop will help you identify local species and create a bird-friendly garden using native plants and thoughtful design. Expert Dr Rochelle Steven will share tips on simple changes like window decals and how to encourage more insects into your yard. Small things can make a big difference.

Nightcalling Screening and Q&A

Enjoy a special screening of Night Calling – a powerful film about how common poisons are silently killing our birds of prey, especially owls. It’s a story that started in Margaret River and grew into a grassroots campaign to protect these beautiful night birds across all communities.

Meet the filmmaker Dr Boyd Wykes, former Ornithologist and passionate bird expert, for a Q&A after the screening.

Bird Walk and Talk

Spend your Saturday morning at beautiful Hyde Park with local bird expert Dr Rochelle Steven. Learn about the diverse bird species that live in the park (there are more than you might think) and how to spot them. Ask questions and find out what we can all do to protect local birdlife.

Whether you’re a keen birdwatcher or just curious about what’s flying around your neighbourhood, this is a great way to spend some time outdoors and connect with nature.
