The journey to and from school is now safer for students at Kyilla Primary School thanks to footpath and road layout upgrades recently completed by the City of Vincent.
The footpath on Bedford Street now runs continuously between Lawler and Doris streets, making moving around the school perimeter safer for students, people who use wheelchairs and parents with prams.
The school’s ‘kiss and drive’ zone was also upgraded to create a clearer road layout that improves access and helps reduce congestion and unsafe or illegal parking.
City of Vincent donated a variety of native trees and plants to provide shade to students walking home from school. The trees, which were grown from seeds collected in reserves, will also provide additional canopy and habitat for local birds and wildlife.
“We are proud to work with Kyilla Primary School to deliver this much-needed upgrade of the main footpath and kiss and drive zone,” said Mayor Alison Xamon.
“One of our main priorities is to ensure that footpaths are kept to a high standard and accessible for all, particularly young children and people with disability.
“We look forward to seeing even more families choosing to walk or ride to school.”
Kyilla Primary School Board Representative, Maggie Mc Phee said:
"I’m really impressed by the upgrades at our school, which are the result of collaborative work by the Kyilla Primary School Board and the City of Vincent.
“The City listened and responded to our concerns, and we were able to work together to improve safety and accessibility for the whole community.”
The project was part of Kyilla Primary School’s 2024–2029 Masterplan and supports Vincent’s Accessible City Strategy.
Vincent’s focus on amenity and walkability is one of the reasons it has been rated as WA’s most liveable city.
