Vincent calls for collaboration on State Government’s borer management

The State Government has announced a $26.5 million plan for the polyphagous shot-hole borer response in the 2025-26 State Budget.

The new plan will focus on the management of the invasive pest to slow its spread, limit the impact on healthy trees and to protect the horticulture industry.

It follows a decision by the National Management Group to transition the biosecurity response to a management phase.

Another $2.17 million from the State Government will fund three new research projects to help limit the spread of shot-hole borer, including investigating chemical treatments, through the WA Agricultural Research Collaboration.

“We would like to work with the State Government on developing the new management strategy.

“Losing trees is a last resort and we need to ensure that we keep as many trees as possible.

“We will continue to work with the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development and the State Government to ensure our polyphagous shot-hole borer infested trees in our parks are managed appropriately and treated where appropriate.

“We encourage the State and Federal Governments to provide extra funding for local governments to effectively manage the borer and replant lost trees in response to this national biosecurity crisis.”
