Scarborough Beach Road & Green Street roundabout

Main Roads WA are building a new dual-lane roundabout at the intersection of Scarborough Beach Road and Green Street, improving safety and traffic flow for all road users.

This project is funded by the State Government, following a 2017 election commitment.

The City of Vincent and City of Stirling have worked with Main Roads on the development and design of an appropriate treatment for the intersection for a number of years. We assisted by facilitating community consultation in 2020, when residents were given the opportunity to provide feedback on initial designs.

Happening now

Construction is underway. To register to receive roadworks updates by email, please visit the Main Roads website

Until late April, 24/7 road closures are in place at the intersection (view detour map). Local access is maintained for Bauxite Lane and Waterloo Street via Baden Street.

The intersection of Scarborough Beach Road and Green Street will also be closed overnight on Sunday 27 April for the application of road seal and the modification of traffic management.

These works will start at 10pm on Sunday and be finished by 6am on Monday 28 April*. Detours will be in place during this time and road users are requested to plan ahead to avoid delays.

Once this work is complete, road users will be able to use the new roundabout with traffic management in place.

Changes to Birrell Street

As part of this project, the existing one-way access into Birrell Street from Scarborough Beach Road must be closed for safety reasons. Once the project is complete, Birrell Street will be reinstated as a cul-de-sac.

The one-way entrance into Birrell Street will be closed from approximately 8 November 2024.

Speed awareness signs

Four temporary speed awareness signs have been installed along Ellesmere Street in Mt Hawthorn. They will remain in place for around six months while Main Roads WA carries out construction on the roundabout.

These new signs are being used for the first time along Ellesmere Street in response to community feedback during the Main Roads Scarborough Beach Road and Green Street project.

Speed awareness signs are designed to encourage safer driving by displaying a vehicle’s speed as it passes. Drivers travelling within the limit will see a green smiling face, while those going over will see a reminder to slow down.

Similar initiatives have been shown to positively influence driver behaviour and help create safer, more pleasant streets.

The signs will also collect traffic speed data to give us a clearer picture of average speeds. This will help us plan safer roads without relying on enforcement or fines.
