You can also access support by;

  • Telling someone else how you feel. This might be your doctor (GP), friend, family member or a professional support person. Whilst it might be difficult talking to someone about how you’re feeling, many people report that that things improve after they get the support they need. If possible, have them stay with you until you get further help.
  • Contact a health professional. Tell them that you are feeling suicidal and need urgent assistance. If you don’t feel comfortable contacting a health professional, ask someone you know to help you with this.

Some tips for getting urgent help include:

  • Clearly express that you or someone you know is at risk of suicide and express the urgency of the matter. It is important not to appear aggressive.
  • Speak clearly. What you are saying is important and the person you are talking to won’t want to miss anything.
  • Give the health professional specific examples of safety concerns. This may include letting them know if you or someone you know has a specific plan to end their life. This will help them to make a judgment about what supports may be most appropriate.
  • Ensure that you listen to their advice. You might find it helpful to have a piece of paper and a pen handy so you can write down any important information.
  • If they are unable to help, ask them why and who you should contact. Don’t give up.
