Handbag Safety

Handbag Safety

Purse and handbag stealing from shopping trolleys at local supermarkets is a frequent occurance. To help prevent becoming a victim of purse/bag theft, follow these safety tips from WA Police – Office of Crime Prevention:

  • If you carry a purse, handbag or bag, hold it close to your body, tucked firmly under your arm. Remember, a thief will observe how you carry it and will be looking for an easy grab.
  • Always keep a firm hold on your handbag, purse or wallet.
  • Don’t leave your handbag, purse or wallet unattended:
    • on a counter or in shopping trolleys
    • on the seat beside you
    • on the bus or train, or in a theatre or restaurant.
  • If someone attempts to steal your bag:
    • always try to remain calm
    • observe the thief so you can give an accurate description to the Police
    • don’t physically resist. No amount of money is worth the risk of serious injury.
  • Handbags are a target for thieves. Consider not using one at all and using pockets or money belts instead.
