For more than 31 years, the Beatty Park Swim School has taught tens of thousands of students of all ages and abilities how to swim and about water safety.
The school currently teaches a record number of 2800 students and runs various programs for children, adults, refugees and people with a disability and special needs.
Its efforts were recognised on the national stage at the recent Australian Swim Schools Association 2023 Excellence Awards in Adelaide.
Team leader Rebecca Ross took home the emerging talent award at the awards night for her leadership, advocacy and service.
Ms Ross started her career as a swim teacher in 2010 and is now a team leader.
Her work has contributed to a strong and happy culture as well as achieving a record number of enrolments at the swim school.
The swim school also received a highly commended certificate as part of the Safer Swimming category for its efforts around water safety.
“I would like to congratulate Rebecca and the swim school on this amazing achievement,” said Mayor Emma Cole.
“From its Angelfish program for students with a disability to block lessons for fly-in, fly-out workers and tailored lessons for Ukrainian refugees, our swim school has taught people from all ages and walks of life how to swim and be safe in the water.
“Over the years, enrolment numbers have increased steadily, and we are now sitting at 2800 - the highest number of students we have ever had.
“The swim school aims to be the best swim school with lessons that are innovative, inclusive and the safest in the industry, as well as continuing to provide a supportive environment for teachers.”
The award win comes after another instructor Brent Walters won the Royal Life Saving WA’s Service Order Award for his commitment to drowning prevention.
Mr Walters has been at the swim school for more than five years.
He teaches students of all levels along with children and adults with a disability as part of the award-winning Angelfish program.
The program provides swimming lessons to more than 100 students, with the goal of integrating them into mainstream lessons.
Meanwhile, the swim school is working with Foyer Oxford Group to offer affordable lessons for young people.
It is also looking to launch private special needs lessons for students.
