The City of Vincent has won a Planning Institute of Australia Award for Excellence in the Climate Change and Resilience category for Environmentally Sustainable Design (ESD) of single houses and grouped dwellings.
Team Vincent was recognised at the Planning Institute of Australia Awards on 17 November.
The project saw Vincent, and Cerclos collaborate to develop a plan that directly addresses the need to incorporate environmentally sustainable design principles for all development types in the district.
The outcomes of this trial exceeded expectations, leading to Cerclos releasing the user-friendly Rapid LCA tool to market.
In terms of environmental sustainability, this initiative has produced outstanding outcomes. Dwellings assessed during the Rapid LCA trial (61 in total) showed:
- An average life cycle carbon reduction of 70 per cent (significantly greater than the 50 per cent specified in the Built Form Policy).
- An estimated 20,742 tCO2e saved, equivalent to 127,266 trees being planted.
Since the completion of the trial and release of the Rapid LCA tool to market, a further 17 dwellings have been assessed as part of the Vincent's planning application process, demonstrating:
- An average life cycle carbon reduction of 68.26 per cent.
- An estimated 7432t CO2e savings.
Vincent’s forward-thinking initiatives towards ESD has delivered significant improvements to the quality of buildings in the district and their liveability. This has been achieved by addressing climate change and is evidenced by outcomes that have been measured.
Vincent also has a Built Form Policy which incorporates environmentally sustainable outcomes to be achieved that go above and beyond industry standards.
Through this, Vincent has taken industry-leading approach that actively promotes ESD principles in building designs and that supports reducing environmental impact, enhances energy and water efficiency and minimises reliance on non-renewable energy sources.
A big congratulations to the team on this achievement!
