The City of Vincent is seeking WA Planning Commission (WAPC) approval of a scheme amendment that will restrict the development of service stations in or near residential and mixed-use areas.

Council supported the Local Planning Scheme No.2 – Amendment No.12 this month.

The scheme amendment includes changes to the scheme to prohibit the location of service stations in residential or directly adjoining mixed-use and centre zones.

Service stations will not be banned from Vincent. New proposals may be considered in commercial zones and existing service stations are able to continue to operate due to having existing land use rights.

The decision comes after a 42-day consultation process where 50 public submissions were received with 46 in support of the scheme amendment.

“This scheme amendment seeks to restrict service stations near our busy town centres, schools and houses,” Mayor Emma Cole.

“Service stations can have a significant impact on community health and increase traffic in surrounding areas.

“Our community has provided overwhelming support for this move as they do not want to see service stations developed in the heart of their neighbourhoods.

“We believe service stations are better suited to be built in commercial areas.”

The scheme amendment will now be forwarded to the WAPC for final approval.
