Anzac Day at Anzac Cottage

Past Event

The outpouring of respect and appreciation for those who fought at Gallipoli one hundred and nine years ago led a community in the new suburb of Mount Hawthorn to construct a memorial.

This tribute to the armed forces had a double purpose: It also provided a home for a returned wounded soldier and his family. Those long-ago citizens contributed their meagre funds, materials and skills to this ambitious project, a brick and tile building constructed in one day.

This emotion is reflected in the annual ANZAC Day commemorations at that memorial, ANZAC Cottage, at 38 Kalgoorlie Street, Mount Hawthorn. The Cottage will be open to the community on Thursday, April 25, from 4 pm to 6 pm.

Commemorations will include the Field of Remembrance, honouring the ancestors of community members, a children’s wearable art activity, and our annual visit from the remarkable Maori Cultural group, Ngaru Pou, ensuring that the “NZ” in ANZAC is never forgotten.

The day concludes at 5 pm with the evocative Sunset Service, a community-based commemoration featuring the younger generation and their perspective on this significant day.

Entry is free, and all are welcome to come together to commemorate our armed forces and their work to ensure our safety and security and to recognise the work of the generous volunteers over a century ago.

The Friends of ANZAC Cottage thank the Heritage Council of WA and The National Trust of Western Australia for their assistance that enables our annual commemorations to take place.
