A much anticipated youth skate space at Britannia Reserve is a step closer with the release of a draft concept plan for the site.
Skate Sculpture has developed a plan for the Mount Hawthorn Youth Skate Space to cater for the City of Vincent’s thriving population of children, tweens and teens.
It includes a mini ramp, quarter pipe, pyramid box, ride up rail, pump bump, log seating and a shade structure with picnic benches and greenery.
The City’s Public Open Space Strategy identified the need for more youth play and recreation facilities. A $200,000 election commitment from Hon. John Carey MLA, State Member for Perth for a skate and scooter facility has brought the project to life.
Last year, the City received the $200,000 funding from the State Government to deliver the skate space with an estimated 350sqm footprint.
The City has also contributed $30,000 towards the skate space.
An early survey by Hon. John Carey MLA found there was strong support for an entry-level skate space in or around Mount Hawthorn, with Britannia Reserve being the most favoured location.
The City of Vincent then consulted young skaters and the wider community between July and August on the proposed location and design.
A draft concept plan was developed, was approved by Council in October and has now been released for community consultation.
“There is a lot of excitement building in our community for the new skate space at Britannia Reserve, from little kids who love to scoot through to more seasoned skaters,” said Mayor Emma Cole.
“The proposed concept has been designed to ensure younger children and entry-level skaters can enjoy the space and grow their skills, with all elements being under one metre high from the current surface level.
“With the existing bike trail and pump track at Britannia Reserve, the skate space will become part of an active and fun recreation hub for our local young people and families. We want to make this a welcome space for all in our community.”
Ms Cole thanked Mr Carey for his election commitment.
Mr Carey said the proposed design followed previous workshops and drop-in sessions.
“With a booming neighbourhood of children and teenagers, this project is about expanding positive recreational facilities for our community,” he said.
“As part of the funding, a working group identified a site near the pump track at Britannia Reserve as the best location.
“The proposed design elements include quarter pipe, box structures, ride up rails, mini ramps and pump bump.
“Additional planting and turf banks will promote integration of the skate space into the park.”
Community members can provide their feedback until 9 November.
The final plan will be considered by Council and if it is approved construction will start in the first half of 2023.
