Free WiFi

The City launched a free telecommunications-grade wireless ‘hotzone’ for Leederville’s busy café precinct at the 2013 Light Up Leederville Carnival, Sunday 1 December.

The service will be available along Oxford Street (south of Vincent Street and up to Leederville Parade) and extends into Newcastle Street (up to the Water Corporation) and also Carr Place (up to the finish of the cafe/retail area).

Mayor John Carey says, “Free WiFi is a necessary amenity for any modern urban culture and this service will only strengthen Leederville’s economy and cafe culture. We thank the local business community for their cooperation in hosting the necessary tech to get this up and running.”

Like most WiFi services, it will support a limited number of users at any one time and there will be some ‘black spots’. The equipment can only ‘point’ to certain places and there will be some gaps and weaker signals in some areas.

The City aims to provide the best (open space) coverage area possible for this precinct but cannot guarantee coverage especially indoor coverage and the signals may not reach into the far back areas of some cafes and shops. All wireless services are susceptible to interference such as competing wireless networks, immutable obstacles (certain walls and building materials) and casual disruptions that occur day-to-day (electrical equipment being used nearby).

We welcome feedback from users regarding these so we can tweak the service. If you wish to provide feedback, please email: mail@vincent.wa.gov.au
