Vincent’s Extraordinary Election results

Published on Wednesday, 1 March 2017 at 12:00:00 AM

At approximately 8:00pm last Friday night, the final votes had been tallied and Emma Cole was officially elected by the community as the City of Vincent’s sixth Mayor, with Jonathan Hallet filling the vacant position as Councillor for the South Ward.

The City held an extraordinary election via postal vote to fill the vacancies left by the recent resignation of John Carey as Mayor in January, and Laine McDonald’s resignation as South Ward Councillor in September last year.

There were two candidates for Mayor: North Ward Councillor for the City, Emma Cole, and South Ward resident Malcolm Boyd who also ran for the position of South Ward Councillor. Six candidates vied for the South Ward Councillor position, with Jonathan Hallet winning with 868 votes or 29.88% of the total votes. Mayor Cole’s term will expire 19 October 2019, whereas Councillor Hallet’s term will expire on 21 October 2017.

You can see the results on the WA Electoral Commission website here.

Hello! From Vincent’s new Mayor Emma Cole…

To the Vincent community – thank you! I am very honoured, and so appreciative of the trust you have placed in me, to carry on the positive direction in Vincent as Mayor.

I take on this role alongside a terrific group of Councillors, CEO and staff who make up ‘Team Vincent’ and I warmly welcome Jonathan Hallett to the team as a new Councillor for the South Ward.

I made a promise to be an open and committed Mayor and I will work hard every day to deliver. The driving force will be my passion for our Vincent community and helping to make this place that we love the best it can be.

We have so many exciting projects coming up this year. Creating better use of open space is high on the agenda, with improvements to Axford Park in Mount Hawthorn and work towards identifying a site for the new North Perth town square is already underway.

We’re also creating safer and better connections within our neighbourhoods with more pedestrian crossings. Upcoming events, such as the Leedy Streets Open! Sunday road closures throughout March, are helping our town centres to thrive.

For community members with a burning idea to improve where you live, work or connect in Vincent, our 2017/18 community budget submissions are about to open. We welcome your ideas!

And we will also be undertaking our biggest community engagement campaign yet – Imagine Vincent – to better understand your priorities for Vincent’s 10 year community plan.

I look forward to the year ahead, working as an open and committed Mayor for our community.

Emma Cole
Vincent Mayor
