Vincent to increase public open space through developer funds

The City of Vincent will use developer funds to improve its parks and green spaces through implementing an existing Western Australian Planning Commission (WAPC) policy.

The WAPC’s 2002 Development Control Policy 2.3 – Public Open Space in Residential Areas is designed to ensure the community has sufficient access to public open space.

From July next year, developers who want to subdivide land to build more than five houses, units or apartments in Vincent will need to allocate up to 10 per cent of the site area to public open space.

This is in line with the WAPC’s policy.

The City will make a recommendation to the WAPC on whether land is provided as public open space or a cash-in-lieu contribution is made.

Cash-in-lieu funds could be allocated to projects such as the Leederville Skate Park redevelopment, Haynes Street Reserve Development Plan and Banks Reserve Master Plan, used to upgrade parks and play spaces or go towards funding the purchase of land for new public open space, subject to the approval of the Minister for Planning.

“By implementing the WAPC’s policy, it will help us to deliver park and playground upgrades shortfalls in parks in Vincent as identified in our Public Open Space Strategy,” said Mayor Emma Cole.

“During the COVID-19 pandemic, we learnt how important our parks were to our community, as many residents loved visiting their local parks where they could take their masks off and enjoy some fresh air every day.

“As our population grows, we need to cater for more homes and residents by increasing and improving our parks and reserves.”
