The City of Vincent wants to address ‘big questions’ about its assets as part of a plan to ensure its key buildings and facilities meet the needs of the community now and in the future.
The City’s vast asset portfolio contains six major regional and leisure sporting facilities, including the historic Beatty Park Leisure Centre and Leederville Oval.
It also includes 38 buildings, halls, pavilions and clubrooms, as well as 47 playgrounds, 106.4ha of parks and gardens and hundreds of kilometres of roads and paths.
The City has created a draft Asset Management and Sustainability Strategy (AMSS) to ensure these assets are well managed into the future.
The AMSS will guide the management, spending and efficiency of the City’s assets over the next decade, ensuring the best use of resources for current and future generations.
“Over the next few months we’re going to address some of the big questions around our buildings and our community’s priorities,” said Mayor Emma Cole.
“It goes without saying that we need to look after our facilities and ensure that they’re safe, but we want to dive deeper into how we can make them more contemporary and maximise use.
“Our assets have to meet the growing needs of our community and our changing environment in a financially sustainable way. We want to work with our community to get guidance on what that will look like.
“What facilities do people value most? Would our community like to see us reduce the number of assets and focus on investing more into certain buildings? Where do your priorities lie?
“These are the kinds of big questions we will be posing.
“Our challenge is to strike the right balance between maintaining our current asset portfolio including our historic and aged facilities, meeting changing community needs and working within our means.”
The draft AMSS focuses on the principle of ‘renew over new’, meaning maintenance projects will be prioritised over new, expansion or upgrade projects when possible.
This will ensure the City’s asset portfolio is filled with high-quality assets that can be used well into the future.
The City will continue to advocate strongly for Federal and State government support for tier one regional sporting and recreational facilities such as Beatty Park and Leederville Oval.
These iconic and highly-valued venues are in need of significant investment to keep them maintained for future generations. They are facilities that attract people from across the metro area and support State-level sporting associations and competitions.
The City will also continue to work with the Federal Government and Floreat Athena Football Club to secure a $3 million grant for facility upgrades at Litis Stadium.
Consultation on the draft AMSS will run for 42 days and will include a series of pop-up engagement events that will give people the chance to discuss the strategy face-to-face with Council members and City staff.
The first pop-up event will be held at the Native Plant Sale at North Perth Common on 17 April from 8 – 11am, with more events to follow.
