Shop and support local in Vincent this Christmas

We are calling on residents to shop local this festive season, to support local retailers and create more sustainable, thriving high streets and vibrant communities.

There has been a significant growth in online spending in recent years, with online sales accounting for 10.5% of total annual retail spend in Australia last year. As shoppers prepare for Christmas, the trend is for online purchases to spike, with 2018 figures showing that the five weeks from 11 November to 15 December accounted for almost 15% of all eCommerce transactions.

Mayor, Emma Cole said that this growing shift to online shopping is having a significant impact on local businesses, who are part of the biggest employers in Australia and a significant contributor to the local community and economy.

“In a time of industry disruption, the City of Vincent is fighting back with a strong message of support for our Vincent high streets.

“Our local retailers and independent businesses need our support now more than ever. They are a strong part of our identity and one of the reasons that people want to live in, and around, our vibrant town centres.

“Studies shows that for every $100 spent at a local business, an average 58% more of your money stays in the community compared to when you spend that money at a multinational company based store.

“Many local businesses also contribute to the fabric of our local community by supporting local designers, being part of our town teams and providing local employment,” she said.

“We are so lucky to have a vast range of unique local businesses such as Varga Girl, Ilka Family Store and Granite Lane right here in Vincent, all offering something unique that you just don’t find in larger shopping centres and retail chain stores.

Ilka on Oxford Street Mount Hawthorn is one of stores featured in the City’s Shop Local campaign.

“At Ilka, all of our brands are WA based and with many of the fashion, lifestyle and homewares made locally. Each purchase supports not only the local artists, it also has a flow on effect to other local industries and manufacturers. Beyond just supporting us as business owners, it helps our local economy,' said Erin, one of the store’s owners.

Johanah Glisteni from Granite Lane Interior Styling also loves the fact that local businesses often support each other.

“We love to support small businesses and local experts in their field so quite a few of our products that we offer in store are made right here in Perth from local artists and craftsmen. This allows us to offer our customers one-of-a-kind products that they won’t find everywhere else, while supporting our fellow Perth creatives.

“Shopping local also means that we can offer you a more personalised service and assistance from our experienced team. Whether it be helping you select the perfect gift or styling your home ready for Christmas, the one on one support you get from shopping local is something that is of great value,” she said.

Vincent is backing up this call to shop local with a major online campaign with prizes to be won from local traders.

“The campaign is designed to showcase the depth, breadth and quality of our local offerings, whilst harnessing the web of social marketing and connection in the Vincent community and beyond. This is designed to have a lasting impact beyond Christmas trade by spreading the word about our local traders and their unique wares,” said Mayor Cole.
