Preserve Vincent's charming streets

From the tree-lined streets of Mount Hawthorn to the enclave of historic workers’ houses in Northbridge, Vincent’s charming streets help shape the character of our city.

The City of Vincent recognises the value of streets and suburbs that have a strong sense of character through the Character Retention Areas Policy.

Neighbours who come together to nominate their street as a character retention area are given the chance to help the City form guidelines for new developments near their homes.

Over the past year, the City has been working closely with a group of Mount Hawthorn residents who wanted to protect the character of their beloved suburb.

The community members shared their views on what makes their streetscapes so beautiful – from the low boundary fences that highlight their gardens to the vertical windows and mullions.

That feedback was used by the City to develop draft character retention guidelines for parts of The Boulevard, Kalgoorlie Street, Buxton Street and Matlock Street.

The guidelines will apply to all new developments in the relevant areas if they are approved.

“This policy is designed to protect our unique streetscapes by encouraging retention of character homes and ensuring new builds compliment the homes that are already there,” said Mayor Emma Cole.

“We have so many beautiful, leafy streets and a high number of original, character homes in Vincent. Character retention doesn’t prevent new homes, but seeks for new developments to enhance our suburbs and complement the context of the local area.

“Any community members who are passionate about preserving their pocket of Vincent can nominate their street as a character retention area if they have the support of their neighbours.

“This is a resident-led process that begins with a nomination and evolves into close community consultation.”
