Past winners judge Garden Competition

Liz Sinclair and Matt Drobel from Leederville are this year’s guest judges in the 2019 Greening Vincent Garden Competition. Liz and Matt were one of last year’s winners and a popular choice to share the guest judge role.

“Our rear garden won Best Food Garden last year. Everything in it has a use: food for us, food for our guinea pig, food for the native wildlife. We have grown veggies, herbs, chillies, guava, pomegranate, figs, olives, lots of citrus varieties and even our very own coffee bean crop,” said Matt.

“Our front garden also won the won Best Catchment Friendly category in 2016 after several second places. It is full of native plants, many of which are rare or endangered. At one point we had over 150 species, attracting a variety of birds and being a home to frogs, lizards and geckos.”

Mayor Emma Cole is excited to welcome Liz and Matt to the judging panel.

“The annual Greening Vincent Garden Competition a much loved community event that demonstrates our community‘s great passion for gardening.”

“You don’t need to have a large garden to win a prize. There is a category to suit all gardens and all gardeners from small balcony, indoor or courtyard gardens, the popular verge garden and even business gardens.”

“The competition is also a great way for our gardening community to come together and show what they can do, and to learn from one another,” said Mayor Cole.

Liz and Matt especially enjoy the community aspect of the garden competition.

“We have found new friends through the garden competition and discovered many great ideas we wanted to try ourselves. It is always a pleasure to share knowledge and help others improve their own patch,” said Liz.

“As this year's guest judges, we are keen to get a closer look at some of our city's fantastic gardens, exchange ideas, and encourage all who entered the competition to spread the word about how much fun a garden can be.”

Entries to the 2019 Greening Vincent Garden Competition close 4 October and judging will take place between 7 – 12 October. The awards night will take place on Wednesday 13 November.

If you have a garden that you are proud of, you can submit your entry online at vincent.wa.gov.au/gardencompetition or fill in an entry form and return it to the City before Friday 4 October.
