National Sorry Day Tomorrow

Published on Friday, 25 May 2018 at 2:55:03 PM

Tomorrow is National Sorry Day where we remember and commemorate Australia's Stolen Generation.

The Stolen Generation were and are Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who were removed as children from their families from the mid 1800s until the 1970s. National Sorry Day has been held annually in Australia on 26 May since 1998.

The City of Vincent is committed to working towards greater reconciliation and improving the wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. As part of our 'Reflect' Reconciliation Action Plan, we have embarked on a journey to build strong and meaningful relationships with the local Noongar community and organisations, and create opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to share their culture, history and traditions.

We acknowledge the strength and resilience of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, and the significant contributions they make to our history, culture and country. We hope that you can join us as we work towards greater equality and reconciliation within our communities.

“Commemorating National Sorry Day is an important part of our ongoing journey towards reconciliation. Reconciliation deepens unity, understanding and respect between us. It involves understanding the historical and ongoing impacts of our colonial past – impacts for Aboriginal people that are still felt today - on culture, spiritual and family connection, and on health and wellbeing. Reconciliation, so importantly, is about building partnerships between us,” said Mayor Emma Cole.

Next week is National Reconciliation Week (27 May – 3 June). Visit our events page to view our Reconciliation Week activities in the City.
