We asked some local mums who live, work or contribute to North Perth to tell us how they plan to celebrate Mother’s Day this year.

Alicia

For Alicia motherhood has been easier since meeting other amazing mums in her North Perth community, many of whom have become life long friends.

Alicia has two boys, Cooper and Griffin, and is actively involved with her kid’s school, having recently volunteered to help manage the school canteen.

“Before becoming a mum I had no idea about is just how challenging it is to be a parent. And how selfless you have to become as a person, but it is also the most rewarding thing and that makes it worth it.”

“It’s amazing also how much your kids pick up from you; hearing your kids say something that you've said to them! It's funny having yourself coming right back at you.”

“I don’t like giving parenting advice but something that helps is to remember even on the tough days you are doing an amazing job and the best you can.”

This Mother's Day she will be relaxing and spending the day with her mum, her husband and boys.

Yok

Yok moved to Australia when she was 8 and has lived most of her life in North Perth. She has a bachelor degree in Psychology, a passion for alternative holistic therapies and is training to be a Reiki master. She is also a mum to Lachlan and Ryan.

She describes the best thing about being a mum is that you get to share this journey of nurturing a young child and seeing them blossom into their full potential.

“Children are amazing life teachers and they remind us every day to just be in the now and fully appreciate the present moment. Their childlike innocence and joyful nature as well as being able to see the real truths of life makes us remember what it feels like to be young & carefree again,” she says.

She is inspired by her own mum, who created a new life in a new country and made sacrifices so her children’s future would be brighter.

She is taking her mum out to High Tea to celebrate Mother’s Day this year and thinks her sons are planning a surprise so she will wait to see what the day has in store.

Sarah

Sarah is a busy woman. She runs Hook and Loop, a local web design and copywriting business with her husband and is a member of our North Perth Local Town Team, looking after their social media and marketing. She is also a mum.

Her favourite part of motherhood are the morning and evening cuddles she shares with her kids, Joseph and Violet.

Sarah admits that it is sometimes challenging to juggle parenthood, running a small business and all the other parts of her life. “Time management is a lot harder than it used to be,” she says.

Sarah’s advice to other mums is to not stress about all the things you ‘should’ be doing, and learn to filter the well-meaning advice too as it can be conflicting and overwhelming.

She is looking forward to a well deserved breakfast in bed this Mother’s Day, before spending some time with her mum.

Sarina

Sarina has two children, five grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Her favourite part of being a nonna is when her whole family comes together to talk, celebrate and eat her food.

She is known for her hand made pastas, gnocchi and a chocolate and nut rice pudding which is a family favourite. She also crochets baby blankets and each one of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren have one of her creations.

Sarina was born in Sicily and arrived in Vincent in 1955 with her parents and siblings when she was 25 years old. She remembers North Perth as a very different place with a lot of bushland and far less people.

It was here that she met her husband Vincenzo and they were married before her 26th birthday.

Though she enjoys being a nonna, she loved being a mum and remembers cuddling her babies when they were younger as some of her favourite memories.

“My babies were very good and well behaved, they gave me joy.”

For Sarina, family is so important, and she is looking forward to having her family around her this Mother’s Day when they all visit her to share a meal.

Aysun

Aysun loves visual arts, theatre, independent movies and the beach. She is an on-demand courier, a friend, wife and mother.

Seven and a half years ago her life changed dramatically when she moved from Turkey to Perth. She had a seven week old daughter, only knew a few English words and was moving to a new country where she knew no one.

The most difficult thing was having no relatives around when she needed them most especially when her husband had a fly in fly out position.

“It was hard but it was also very good for me,” she says. “I grew so much as a person and as a mother, and I love it here. Perth is my home.”

The best part of being a mother is the unconditional love you get from your child and from being a family. “I feel stronger after becoming a mum.”

Her family of three moved to North Perth in 2013 and she immediately felt at home. “The community here is more multicultural and friendlier than the suburb we first lived in. I have great neighbours.”

This mother’s day she is looking forward to breakfast prepared by her family and then spending the day at the beach.

Kellie

Kellie has two kids and also spends a good chunk of her time at the Angove Street Collective in North Perth where she works.

She describes the best bits about being a mum are constantly changing as her kids grow. “When my kids were first born, those moments when they were sleeping soundly in my arms were the best minutes of my life, but as each year goes by I constantly tell my husband that we are in the best stage with our kids.”

There are also many challenges. “Work/life balance causes me the most angst. Trying to carve out a meaningful career, and give Millie & Thomas as much time as I can, is hard work.”

Her best advice to other mums is to become friends with other mums who will save you and support you and in turn you will save and support them. “It’s a pretty cool thing that I didn’t expect to happen, but I’m thankful it did.”

For Mothers Day she is looking forward to an early morning breakfast where she will receive some homemade cards and a present, before she heads to work for the day.

Mayor Emma Cole

Being a mum to two little boys is funny, messy, crazy and joyful. One of my favourite moments with my kids is reading together at bed time. It is a very calm time of day, and often the best conversation and connection happens in these precious moments.

I am inspired by my own Mum, who I miss every day, but who remains a great role model to me for her grounded, compassionate and down to earth approach to life. I know she would adore her grandchildren and it is lovely to see the family resemblance carried on in them.

My one recommendation to new parents would be to join their local playgroup. I was fortunate to join Earlybirds Playgroup in Mt Hawthorn and to be part of an incredibly supportive and wonderful group of mums, dads and grandparents. Forging new friendships when coming to grips with the whole new world of parenting is a very powerful thing. My firstborn is 10 years old this month, and these friendships and the support that comes with them have endured – for both me and my children. And that is priceless.
