The City of Vincent is calling for locals or people who grew up in the suburbs of Vincent during the 20th century to write down their memories or dust off their photographs for the annual Local History Awards.
“The awards are a fantastic way to remember our past and add to the Local History Centre’s extensive collection of images and essays,” said Mayor Emma Cole
“Do you recognize the uniform of the man on the cover of our Local History Awards? He was a tram conductor who worked on the local trams prior to the 1960s. If you remember a time in Vincent when trams travelled down the streets, I’m sure you would have some wonderful memories, photos or slides to share.”
Last year’s winner of the Geoffrey Bolton Award: Life in Vincent prize was Gail Dorter who wrote an engaging childhood memoir of life in North Perth from 1945-56. She received $400 as her prize. To read her memoirs, visit the Local History Centre at the Vincent library.
“We are not only looking for older stories and photographs. The scope is anything during the 20th century so more recent memories are also welcome. One of last year’s photographic award winners was a photo taken in 1983 of two kids playing in a concrete trough,” said Mayor Cole.
The total prize money up for grabs is $2,100 across three categories:
- Geoffrey Bolton Award: Life in Vincent – 20th century memories of living in Vincent
- Open – an essay on anything relevant to the history of the area
- Photographs or slides - 20th century photographic gems or a series on a topic
Entries for the awards close 30 July 2018. More information and entry forms can be found at the City of Vincent Library and Local History Centre, online here or by calling 9273 6534.
