Garage Sale Trail Returns to Vincent

The City of Vincent is urging households, schools and community groups to join 400,000 people across the country on the Garage Sale Trail on Saturday 20 October and Sunday 21 October.

An award-winning community and sustainability event, Garage Sale Trail is powered by over 140 local councils nation-wide. It is expected that this year’s weekend long event will involve more Australians than ever before, who will choose to reuse at over 15,000 garage sale events to be held across the country.

Mayor Emma Cole commented that the Garage Sale Trail is a fun way to remind locals that there are other options to throwing things away and we all need take responsibility for the waste we generate.

“Garage Sale Trail is a great way to meet your neighbours and also provides a bit of inspiration to declutter, recycle and perhaps raise some money along the way. It’s a great excuse to go on a neighbourhood adventure, find some treasure and enjoy being part of this growing community event.”

“The City of Vincent recently launched our Waste Strategy that sets the ambitious target of zero waste to landfill by 2028. In order to achieve this are encouraging our local residents to embrace waste reduction and choose to reuse and rehome their goods rather than putting them in the bin. Having a garage sale is a great way to do this.”

“The war on waste message is powerful in our Vincent community. There’s a lot of support and willingness for change in the way we deal with our rubbish. Zero waste to landfill in ten years is an ambitious target, but we can be innovative in how we get there. We can’t keep doing what we are doing if we are to reach this goal.”

Garage Sale Trail organisers project that 1.5+ million items will be listed for sale and reuse. Last year the average:

  • Household sale made $370 on the day
  • Participants connected with 50 local people
  • And redistributed 250kgs of stuff

“We ask sellers to name their sale which is a bit of fun and adds a little colour to their garage sale event”, said Garage Sale Trail Co-Founder Darryl Nichols.

“Some past examples include The Almost Deceased Estate, It’s a Divorce, Garage Sale of the Century and The Only Lionel Vinyl Sale.”
