The City of Vincent has approved a new Greening Plan 2018-2023 for community comment. The plan aims increase the number of trees on private and public land to almost double the tree canopy in Vincent by 2050.
“Our Imagine Vincent consultation strongly highlighted that our community wants more green spaces and to protect and increase the number of trees in Vincent,’’ said Mayor Emma Cole.
“We adopted our first Greening Plan in 2014 with a target to increase our tree canopy to 20% by 2050. During 2009 - 2014 we actively planted trees in the public domain but an equal number were being lost on privately owned land, primarily to subdivision and redevelopment.”
Since the 2014 Greening Plan was introduced the City has planted:
- over 1,600 street trees
- 25km of greenways (streets that provide shady tree canopy for walking and cycling as well as biodiversity links for local fauna)
- over 2.6 hectares of native habitat through its eco-zoning program.
“The Greening Plan 2018-2023 is looking to continue the City’s good work in the public domain, and also increase our focus on promoting the preservation and planting of trees on private property,” said Mayor Cole.
“This will include support for our community to realise the benefits of trees to provide shade, combat urban heat and support biodiversity. We will also provide practical advice, support and subsidies to residents and property owners to enable them to choose and plant appropriate trees and landscaping species on their property.”
“The plan also encourages sensitive development that incentivises the retention of existing trees during a subdivision or a development, and assisting developers to choose appropriate tree and landscaping species to reinstate any lost trees.”
“A great deal of work has gone into the development of this draft Greening Plan and I’d especially like to thank the contribution of the City’s Environmental Advisory Group for their advice in the development of this plan,” she said.
The City’s Environmental Advisory Group consists of 10 community representatives who have relevant expertise and experience in environmental matters.
The draft plan will soon be advertised for community feedback with an aim for the plan to be presented for final adoption in the second half of 2018.
