Community feedback wanted on how Vincent collects junk waste

Bulk hard waste verge “junk” collections are being reviewed as part of the City of Vincent’s vision of sending no waste to landfill by 2028.

The City is putting forward a number of bulk waste collection options for discussion with the community, with information on environmental impact and waste to landfill considerations.

An online survey has been launched so community members can share their thoughts on the current service and possible alternatives.

“Junk waste collection is currently happening across Vincent. Each year, I hear from residents who absolutely love it and those who really don’t like it at all. There is deep sentiment about the tradition of the annual junk verge collection in our community.

“Some people see it as a great way to find a treasure and bring community together and others complain of illegal dumping, increasingly messy piles of junk, and less of the good stuff available. The take up of gifting in our community through ‘Buy Nothing’ social media pages, the annual Garage Sale Trail and the like has certainly had an impact on what makes it onto the verge.

“There is also an important discussion to have about the amount of waste that makes it to landfill each year, with around 700 tonnes of junk being disposed of each year.

“We want to have a discussion with our community about the pros and cons and what it means in terms of working towards our ambitious target of zero waste to landfill by 2028.

“There are a range of options up for discussion and we would love to hear from as many residents as possible on this issue. In speaking to community members about this over the past couple of years, it is something that generates a lot of discussion!” said Mayor Emma Cole.

The City of Vincent Waste Strategy 2018-2023 includes an ambitious target of sending zero waste to landfill by 2028. The Strategy includes a review of bulk waste collection options in consultation with the Vincent community and the introduction of a three-bin FOGO system next year.

A number of community members raised concerns after the last bulk hard waste collection in February 2019. Concerns centered on overnight scavenging, strewn waste piles and litter, the length of time people were allowed to leave junk on their verge, illegal dumping and access and safety issues.

The waste survey is being managed by an independent research provider and responses will remain confidential. A link to the online survey is available below.

The survey has been posted to a random selection of Vincent households - if you have already completed the survey online or via post, you do not need to submit again.
