Did you know that up to 35% of the average household bin is food waste? If this ends up in landfill it produces methane gas, which contributes to climate change. Composting is nature’s circular economy, where food waste is reused and its nutrients recycled into fertiliser.
To encourage composting among the Vincent community, Transition Town Vincent have set up a community compost station at Britannia Reserve. Residents can bring their kitchen food waste from home, like vegetable scraps and coffee grinds (no meat or animal waste) and drop them into the compost bins installed at the composting station.
Volunteers from the Transition Town Vincent team will then maintain the compost tumblers with the correct mix of wet and dry compostable materials. Residents who contribute to the project will be able to return and collect the rich garden compost for use in their homes. Some of the compost will also be set aside by Transition Town Vincent for community projects and fundraising purposes.
The City of Vincent is proud to support this community driven initiative which will help to reduce waste sent to landfill and produce rich compost that residents can use in their gardens.
