Comments welcome on bike plan

The City of Vincent wants its community members to have their say on the Department of Transport’s long-term plan for a continuous bike network through the Perth and Peel regions.

The draft Long Term Cycle Network (LTCN) details the Department’s vision for a bike network that links parks, schools, community facilities and transport services across 33 local governments.

The City is asking for feedback on the proposed routes through Vincent so we can provide your comments to the Department of Transport and ensure the best routes and solutions for Vincent.

The LTCN does not commit the City to build infrastructure. Instead, the State Government will use the routes identified to allocate funding for cycling infrastructure to local governments.

“The proposal from the Department of Transport initially included a route through Hyde Park, but we made it clear this route was not acceptable to our Council and community and would not be endorsed,” said Mayor Emma Cole.

“This route is being removed and our deadline for final comment on the plan has been extended to allow us to do meaningful consultation.

“I really appreciate that Transport Minister Rita Saffioti MLA has given us extra time to consult community members on a topic that is really important to them.

“Well connected cycle infrastructure is really important to our inner-city neighbourhoods.

“As we continue to improve our bike network, we encourage more people to cycle. This leads to better heath, easy access to our town centres, community facilities and parks, reduced reliance on parking and easing congestion and pollution."

The Department of Transport’s LTCN is an aspirational plan that will evolve over time as road uses change or aspirations grow.

Further comprehensive consultation on cycling in Vincent will take place next year when the City updates its own Bike Network Plan.

The City will again review the LTCN during that process and will provide comments to the Department for consideration.
