City of Vincent response to Floreat Athena Football Club Funding Announcement

Published on Saturday, 25 August 2018 at 8:15:11 PM

The City of Vincent will be seeking additional information from both Floreat Athena Football Club and the Federal Government following today’s surprise announcement of a $3 million funding commitment towards Litis Stadium, announced by One Nation Senator Peter Georgiou.

“The City of Vincent and Football West were not consulted or included in this funding process. As the landowner of Litis Stadium, on behalf of our community, and as Football West is the State Sporting Association and also a major stakeholder, this was quite a surprise,” said Mayor Emma Cole.

In November 2017, the Council made a decision not to enter into a long-term lease with Floreat Athena Football Club at Litis Stadium but approved a short-term lease on the proviso that the Club, in collaboration with Football West, investigate facility options including co-location opportunities, prepare a Facility Management Plan, prepare a Financial Plan, and implement a range of governance improvements.

“While the City acknowledges the efforts and excitement of the Club in obtaining this funding commitment, it does not alter our position on the club’s short term lease and the work that needs to be undertaken to inform any future facility options and associated tenure arrangements.”

The City of Vincent has committed to investigating the future use, management and development of Litis Stadium in consultation with the local community through the Britannia Reserve Master Plan Review which will be undertaken in 2020/21, as outlined in our Corporate Business Plan 2018/19 - 2021/22.

“We look forward to ongoing dialogue with Floreat Athena and Football West to understand how this funding commitment will assist the club in meeting the requirements of their short term lease,” said Mayor Cole.

“The City has a number of other high priority projects within our Corporate Business Plan where future funding support may be sought from the Federal Government, so we will also need to understand what impact this announcement may have on these other important community projects.”
