Charity Clothing Drop Off Day

We are hosting a Charity Clothing Drop Off Day, where you can donate any unwanted clothing and textiles for a good cause. The Drop Off Day will be on Saturday 24 November, from 9am until 3pm, at the Loftus Centre Carpark (entry via Richmond Street).

Residents can bring any textiles, in any condition. Clothing, bedding, towels, curtains and shoes will be accepted, whether they are new, old, or worn out. Donated items will be re-sold by local charities or reused.

Mayor Emma Cole said the Charity Clothing Drop Off Day is a perfect way to prevent clothing from ending up in landfill.

“The City of Vincent’s Waste Strategy sets the ambitious target of zero waste to landfill by 2028. To help achieve this we are encouraging our local residents to embrace waste reduction and to look for ways to give unwanted things a second life rather than putting them in the bin. The Charity Clothing Drop Off Day is a great way to do this.”

“Clothing and textiles in landfill can rot and release greenhouse gases, which contribute to global warming. Across Australia, 6,000kg of clothing is dumped in landfill every 10 minutes,” she said.

“Clothing and textiles also contaminate yellow top recycling bins, as they can be entangled in the machinery at material recovery facilities.”

The clothing and textiles will be gathered on the day by five local charities: Vinnies, Salvos, Good Sammy’s, Anglicare and Paraquad Industries (a division of the Spine & Limb Foundation). Any items that cannot be re-sold will get recycled into industrial rags and wipes.

“The Charity Clothing Drop Off Day gives our community a great opportunity to clean out their cupboards and get rid of unwanted fabric items. Instead of them going to landfill, they will be re-purposed or re-homed via our charity stores” she said.

Please note, the Charity Clothing Drop Off Day is for textiles only. Furniture, white goods, e-waste and other household rubbish will not be accepted. These items can be taken to Balcatta or Tamala Park.
