Local gardeners were rewarded at the annual Greening Vincent Garden Competition awards night held at the North Perth Town Hall on Wednesday 14 November.
“The Greening Vincent Garden Competition recognises our many passionate local gardeners for all the time, passion and skill it takes to tend to their gardens and beautify the City of Vincent,” said Mayor Emma Cole.
“It is one way to say thank you to our local gardeners for the contribution they make to greening Vincent – in their back yards, at local businesses, on balconies and verges. They show us that creating a lush green space can happen almost anywhere.
“It’s also great to see more and more use of native plants, which use less water and increase biodiversity.”
The City received 83 entries in this year’s competition from all over Vincent, representing gardens both big and small. There were 23 awards presented including winners and finalists.
“We had a marked increase in the number of entrants in our verge category which reflects the ongoing popularity of our Adopt a Verge program and changes to the City’s verges and street trees policies, which means residents have the freedom to do so much more,” she said.
A final judging panel of three City of Vincent Councillors, two staff, a representative from the Water Corporation and a community judge from last year’s winners had the enjoyable task of visiting entrant homes around Vincent to determine the winners and finalists in each category.
The 2018 Greening Vincent Garden Competition winners are:
- Best residential front garden – Geoff Cooper, North Perth
- Best residential rear garden – Bette Parker, East Perth
- Best courtyard or balcony garden – Chris Montgomery, North Perth
- Best kept verge - Jessica & Thomas Bruins, Mount Hawthorn
- Best vegetable or food garden - Elizabeth Sinclair & Matt Drobel, Leederville
- Catchment friendly garden (sponsored by Water Corporation) - Peter & Dixie Burgess, East Perth
- Best business garden – Chris Watt – Stomp Coffee, North Perth
- Mayor’s encouragement award – Jeremy Bosworth, North Perth
- Verge encouragement award (sponsored by John Carey MLA) - Greg Nolan – North Perth
During the awards ceremony the City also remembered a local gardener who passed away shortly after the Awards in 2017.
“Mr Michele Santini was a regular entrant in our Greening Vincent Garden Competition; he entered his garden in our food garden category each year and was a frequent winner or runner up over the past ten years. Michele was especially known for his amazing artichokes. His garden was an inspiration and demonstrated his great skill in growing very fine produce. He was missed at this year’s awards and we took a moment to remember his contribution to Vincent,” said Mayor Cole.
The Greening Vincent Garden Competition is run by the City of Vincent and supported by the Water Corporation and other sponsors who donated prizes for the awards night.
