The Gornall family lived in Egina Street Mount Hawthorn. In 1916 they purchased a beach block at Scarborough and went there for a holiday. Tragedy ensued and five people ended up drowned. This event was instrumental in the formation of the Scarboro Surf Lifesaving Club.
