We've Done the Numbers
The City of Vincent is committed to the health of the community and has such, introduced MenuWise - kilojoule labelling initiative. As a WA first, this new voluntary menu labelling programme is designed to enable customers of participating food businesses to choose healthier eating options when eating out.
What is MenuWise?
Research suggests that being overweight will put you at a greater risk of a number of diseases including diabetes, heart disease and some cancers. The City of Vincent is committed to the health of the community and has introduced the MenuWise - kilojoule labelling initiative.
MenuWise businesses will display the total energy content of each food or drink item sold - giving customers an informed choice. Food businesses that participate will commit to displaying the kilojoule content of all food and drinks sold, support mothers who wish to breastfeed and provide safe, hygienically prepared foods in addition to doing their bit to work towards a healthier WA.
A survey by the City in 2008 showed overwhelming support from both the local food industry and the community for devising a programme that would assist consumers to choose healthier eating options. These findings and the City's commitment to public health saw the City forge ahead with developing a programme to meet the needs of the community.
Lead by the City of Vincent, with support from Healthway, the Department of Health's Food Unit, Cancer Council WA, Catering Institute WA, Diabetes WA, Heart Foundation (WA Division), and Nutrition Australia, MenuWise was created.
MenuWise will enable consumers to choose food and drink based on its total energy content and equip food businesses with the resources needed to calculate the total energy content of all products sold. Customers will be able to walk into a MenuWise accredited food business and know exactly how suitable a snack, meal or drink will be for their personal dietary energy needs. To enable this, food products sold at participating food businesses will be labelled with the total kilojoule content of that food; not per 100grams, not per nominal serve, but the total.
