To help maintain the streetscapes and amenity of the Town, the Parks Services team in conjunction with a qualified Pesticide operator undertakes weed control of road reserve areas including footpaths, kerb lines and traffic islands. The chemical used is "Roundup" (Glyphosate), a non-selective herbicide. Residents are notified of the upcoming weed control via advertisements in the local papers and a notice on this website. You can choose to have your property placed on an exemption list; however the area adjacent to your place of residence must remain weed free.
Weed control is undertaken only in appropriate conditions. Weed control will not be undertaken in wind conditions exceeding 15 km/h, when it is raining or rain is imminent, or in temperatures exceeding 35 degrees. Signage is displayed on vehicles during the spraying operation to advise the public that spraying is taking place.
Weeds growing over the kerb are controlled using the above herbicide. Where kerb lines are edged and maintained, these properties are not sprayed.
Weed control along footpaths is not to exceed 10mm beyond the outside edges of the footpath. Where footpaths are edged and maintained, these properties are not sprayed.
Each year (during July/August) various parks and reserves get sprayed for control of broadleaf weeds including Onehunga/Jojo.
Appropriate signage is clearly displayed during the application and spraying is undertaken by a licensed contractor under strict supervision and guidelines. The chemical used is "Spearhead" which is of slight to moderate toxicity and is non-toxic to insects and animal life when used in this type of application.
