A joint Town of Vincent and Western Australia Police Crime Prevention Project,
BackPack Safe is an award winning safety and security information package designed for backpacker tourists travelling in Western Australia.
BackPack Safe was originally developed by the Town in July 2002 to raise travellers' awareness of their own safety and is an easy reference if they need help. The programme still attracts a great deal of interest and still has relevance to travellers visiting Perth. Based on the success of the project the Town has recently re-launched the BackPack Safe programme in partnership with WA Police and the City of Perth.
The pack includes a
poster [2MB] for displaying in hostels and lodging houses, and a wallet-size card of
safety hints [1.6MB], emergency telephone numbers and other helpful information.
Use the following tips to help you experience a safe and enjoyable visit:
- Always let someone know where you are going and when you will return.
- Whenever possible, travel with a friend or in a group.
- Avoid taking shortcuts through deserted areas.
- Report crime to Police.
- Don't carry excess amounts of cash.
- Use the personal security lockers available at the hostel.
- Mark all your valuables with identification.
- If you are hiring or borrowing a vehicle, keep it locked and avoid leaving valuables inside.
- Do not give lifts to hitch-hikers or strangers.
- When you go 'pubbing and clubbing', do not leave your drink or valuables unattended.
