The Town endorses reusable water bottles and now has reusable water bottles made from recycled plastic (closed the loop) in two sizes and colours available for sale at Beatty Park and the Administration & Civic Centre at $2.00 each.
At Town-run events a number of bottles are given away free of charge. A water trailer that filters the water and with drinking fountains will be at all the summer events the Town runs, so there is no need to buy single-use water bottles if you are attending.
The Town is following the Sydney local council City of Manly in their boycott of single-use water bottles and has installed more drinking water fountains and doggy water fountains around Vincent to encourage residents to refill their water bottles and stay hydrated when they are out and about enjoying our Town.
Something to think about before you reach for a single-use bottle of water:
- In the USA plastic bottles produced for water require 1.5 million barrels of oil per year – that's enough to generate electricity for 250,000 homes or fuel some 100,000 motor vehicles for a year.
- The manufacture of bottles also can cause the release of chemical toxins and other by-products of plastic-making into water, air, or other parts of the environment. Smaller water bottles are made from polyethylene terephthalate (PET) which can generate 100 times more toxic emissions than the equivalent amount of glass.
- According to the Container Recycling Institute, 86% of plastic water bottles used in the United States become garbage or litter. Buried water bottles can take up to 1,000 years to biodegrade.
- If you are going out, remember to take your water with you and refill
- If you really do have to use a single-use bottle try and reuse the bottle and then recycle, don’t throw it in the bins and send to landfill.

So next time you visit the Administration & Civic Centre or Beatty Park Leisure Centre, why not pick up a reusable water bottle and do your bit to help the environment? |
