The William Street Up-grade from Brisbane to Newcastle Streets will be of tremendous benefit to local businesses, visitors and the Vincent community. The revitalisation of William Street will create a lively and prosperous area that gives great character to its surrounds.
William Street enjoys a diversity of cultures, both past and present, historical importance for Perth and is a drawcard to the area with its abundance of retail, dining and entertainment diversions in a vibrant, colourful and cosmopolitan setting. The up-grade aims to capitalise on the attraction of this area and create a readily identifiable and popular precinct boasting shops and restaurants overflowing with vitality and atmosphere.
The plans for the streetscape up-grade include changing the road to two lanes with embayed parking, reducing the speed limit to 50kph and working with Main Roads WA to optimise traffic flow along the whole street.
Working collaboratively with the City of Perth, EPRA, Main Roads WA and Western Power the Town is progressing plans to develop a holistic approach to William Street which will create a distinct area which is not only safer for pedestrians, cyclists and drivers, but also a vibrant and attractive area to work in and visit.
Beautification endeavours will include the planting of mature trees along the breadth of William Street and including feature date palms on the west side of William Street to mark the significant presence of the Perth Mosque adjacent.
Decorative street lights, footpaths/paving, street furniture and public artworks will also feature, together with the undergrounding of the power along the street which has commenced.
The overall project should be completed in the latter part of 2007.
