Beatty Park Leisure Centre is one of the Town of Vincent’s greatest and most recognisable assets. In addition to the aquatic centre being a leader in recreation facilities in this State since its creation in 1962, it has been an icon in the Vincent community. The Centre not only caters for our community, but draws patrons from across the metropolitan area and has been the pre-eminent choice for sporting groups and schools as a venue for aquatic events.
The Town of Vincent is dedicated to ensuring that Beatty Park continues to meet and exceed the expectations of its patrons, remains a state-of-the-art recreation facility and a well-managed and profitable asset for our ratepayers.
The last major refurbishment of the Centre took place in the 1990s and the Centre is at a stage where the needs of users have changed and the plant and equipment are due for replacement. Now is the time to look at the Centre and ensure that Beatty Park retains its place as a premier recreation facility catering to diverse needs and operates as an asset for years to come.
To achieve this, redevelopment concept plans have been drafted. Details of the proposed plans (including visuals) can be found below.

An important part of the progression of the Redevelopment of Beatty Park is the community's input into the Concept Plans. Community consultation ended on 12 September 2008 and the Town thanks all who took the time to provide their comments.

By redeveloping the Centre, the Town hopes to create a state-of-the-art, modern and competitive leisure centre that will act as a magnet for a diverse range of recreation activities that will complement the sustainability objectives of the Town. At present the Centre is a popular aquatic and fitness facility; the redevelopment would ensure the long-term viability of the Centre and meet the current and future needs of patrons by incorporating best practice and innovation.
The Redevelopment Concept Plans focus on a number of key proposed works. These are outlined below:
The heritage-listed façade of the complex would not be affected by the redevelopment. A two-level building would be constructed on the eastern side of the complex.
As part of the redevelopment the following are being proposed:
- New entry including dry lounge.
- The Centre would boast two lounge areas – one wet and one dry so that patrons
could enjoy the services of the café and chill out areas based on their activities at
the Centre.
- New and enlarged Retail Shop. It is envisioned that entry would be through automatic doors.
- New two-level building: the ground level would accommodate a new entry reception, retail area, dry lounge, lift and a large gymnasium. The lower level would house patron’s toilet/change area, two group fitness and one spin area, centralised staff administration area and kitchen service zone.
- Relocate Swim School.
- Upgrade of the Crèche.
To ensure that our pools meet current industry standards and patron expectations, the following upgrades are proposed:
- Outdoor pool – upgrade of existing 50m x 8 lane pool by widening to 10 lanes.
New water treatment plant and tiling. Increase in depth of shallower end from 1.06m to 1.35m.
- Dive pool – upgrade with new base depth of 3.7 metres.
- Indoor pool – replace two concrete slides with new fibreglass slides.
Beatty Park Leisure Centre is one of the very few leisure centres in Perth to have a sauna, spa and steam-room. As part of the redevelopment the area would be upgraded:
- Spa area to be refurbished and upgraded. Sun deck to be extended out in the tree
canopy to make an attractive and relaxed area with more privacy.
- The sauna and steam-room would be retained to ensure that patrons can enjoy the
numerous benefits of the various treatments.
To continue meeting accessibility, health and safety requirements and the needs of our patrons, a number of upgrades are envisaged:
- Upgrade of existing toilets and change-rooms.
- Refurbishment of existing toilets/change-rooms on north side of indoor pool as five
new family toilet/change facilities.
- New spa toilets and change-rooms.
The health benefits of water-based therapy have been known for thousands of years and are a popular treatment for a number of ailments. In keeping with the Centre’s holistic approach to health and fitness, a new hydrotherapy area has been proposed:
- New hydrotherapy area (hot pool) at north rear corner of the site. New water
treatment plant, specific toilets and change area would be included.
- Professional rooms to be included in the hydrotherapy area.
The area at the western end (cnr Morrison and Vincent Streets) which is currently occupied with administration offices would undergo a minor upgrade to enable these offices to be leased to recreation and associated professionals. This would provide an income stream to the Town and encourage the holistic, health-focus for the Centre to be realised.
The popularity of Beatty Park is evidenced in the number of visitors parking at the Centre each day. To ensure that patrons can continue to enjoy the convenience of parking on-site a ‘deck’ would be constructed over the existing car park, providing additional car bays. This area would be screened and the Town would make use of this screening to incorporate public art. In addition the following are proposed:
- Upgrade to improve the traffic flow into and out of the existing car park.
- Suspended open footbridge from car park to entry.
- Universal access would be a priority to ensure accessibility for all Centre patrons.
As part of the overall refurbishment, the following works are also proposed:
- Upgrade of existing water treatment plant and plant room.
- Repainting of indoor pool interior and exterior.
- Repainting and general maintenance to be undertaken on the existing outdoor grandstand.
- Close off access stairs to underwater viewing area (in the indoor pool) and provide
spectator seating instead.
- Upgrade lawn and landscaping areas to outdoor pool area.
